IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

What is the Middle Years Programme?

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) refers to students who are 11 through 16 years of age.  The IB-MYP programme provides a framework for learning in a way that is authentic and real-world relevant, engaging students through inquiry and other learner-centered approaches.  All students in the MYP benefit from this educational framework that encourages students to become critical and reflective thinkers. Through the exploration of their MYP subjects, students develop their content knowledge as well as the attitudes and skills necessary to be successful contributing members of society. 


MYP offers courses in eight subject groups: Arts, Design, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, and Science. Teachers collaborate regularly to find interdisciplinary connections between their units, and as a result, learning is not confined to the walls of individual classrooms, or even the school!  Because it is an international programme, students who graduate from IB at Tubman will have experienced coursework of the same rigor as kids from all over the world.


After 8th grade , Tubman students may decide to continue their MYP education at an IB high school.  IB also offers a Primary Years Programme for younger students, and a Diploma Programme and Career Related Programme for Juniors and Seniors in High School.


MYP at Tubman

Tubman Middle Years Programme (MYP) is beginning it’s fourth official year as an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Students in years 1-3 will have new and exciting responsibilities which are a part of an IB education. Please see the highlights below.

Sixth Grade (MYP Year 1):  Students will learn more about an MYP education including how it differs from the Primary Years Program (PYP). Students will be exposed to concepts and ideas that include; Global Context, Inquiry Questions, ATL Skills and Key and Related Concepts.

Seventh Grade (MYP Year 2): Students will become more familiar with the MYP program in year 2.  Teachers will guide the learning through units of studies in all subject areas, further exploring certain aspects of the program, such as AtL skills, student agency, and service in action.

Eighth Grade (MYP Year 3):  As part of their 8th grade requirements, students will complete the MYP Year 3 community project. Students will research a community need that interests them, develop a plan of action to help serve that need and then put that plan in action. This is one of the culminating projects for MYP year 3 students.

Community Projects

What is the MYP Community Project?

 The Grade 8 Community Project is a major activity for students to complete in year three (8th grade) of the MYP program at Tubman Elementary School. As part of being an authorized IB-MYP school, all 8th grade students will be required to complete a community project.

 The community project focuses on community and service, and gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning.  Previously, service learning was an opportunity for students to go out in the community and demonstrate service as action, but due to the global pandemic, students will use their creativity to address a need in their  community while still maintaining their safety.  As a consolidation of learning, the community project engages students in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community. The community project is completed individually or in groups of a maximum of three students. The choice of the topic for the project is made in consultation with an advisor who has the responsibility for supervising the development of the project according to Assessment Criteria based on the International Baccalaureate Organization guidelines.  

The aims of MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:

    • participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context
    • generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
    • demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
      • communicate effectively in a variety of situations
      • demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
      • appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

The 8th grade Community Project for 2020-2021 has come to an end!  The students worked incredibly hard on this service project, which they began in November.  The quality of work from students was commendable, especially during the pandemic. Projects are displayed on the MYP page of the school website.   Ms. Craig, who was their Community Project Coordinator, reflected upon the process.  “Guiding our 8th grade students through this process was remarkable. We witnessed first-hand how our students approached research, collaborated with their peers and outside organizations, took action, evaluated their progress and reflected honestly on their overall community project experience.  One group shared the following quotation by Martin Luther King, Jr. in their Final Thoughts section of their presentation:  “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter".  Thank you to all our Agents of Change.”
